Equal pay, equal tennis

January 25th, 2010 admin

Watching the Australian Open this past week has reminded me just how annoying it is that tennis, a sport which has in recent memory generally been fair to female athletes , still makes a fundamental distinction between men’s and women’s play that blatantly patronizes female athletes. Why do men typically play five-set matches but women always three? In truth, I don’t like five-set matches, at least not for routine tournament play. I’d prefer a system in which all matches are three-set, except maybe the final. But whatever the system, have it the same …

Why do some men hate women’s sports?
In a San Jose State University Spartan Daily piece, Angela Marino writes of having overheard a male student complain about women’s sports. He doesn’t think that women can play sports. Fine. But why complain? Surely he’s not being forced to watch women’s sports, so why is he troubled by them? I was asked about this strange phenomenon—this...

IndyCar first: four women to start in season opener
The inaugural Sao Paulo Indy 300 will mark several firsts, mainly of interest only to avid Indy-race fans, but one in particular grabbed my attention: this will be the first time that four women have started an IndyCar race. Methinks IndyCar is entitled to a little self-praise: “This is really fantastic for our sport,” said Terry Angstadt,...
WWE’s Melina: putting the smack down
I have many passions; but professional wrestling isn’t one of them. Nonetheless, I respect its female practitioners and tune in occasionally to see what they are up to. Or better yet, I set the DVR to record and later skip to the women’s matches, bypassing as much nonsense as possible. That was the case with the SmackDown airing Friday...
In the news: Title IX
By giving young women many more opportunities to compete in athletics Title IX made possible the awe-inspiring female athletes we see today. I am singularly grateful for that. Never far from it, Title IX was again in the news this week when the Obama administration, of course not without fanfare , announced that it was revising (or re-revising) the...

Jennifer Love Hewitt: "I really want to play Wonder Woman"
I don’t know how you feel about a 5′2″ Wonder Woman, but Jennifer Love Hewitt , through her publicized entreaty , does lend credence to reporting of late: “I’m fighting so hard. I think Warner Bros. is getting ready to make Wonder Woman and I really want to play Wonder Woman.” Thus we may conclude that something...
Why milk?
The benefits women—female athletes in particular—reap from strength training are well-established. A new study shows, however, that drinking milk after lifting weights enhances and accelerates them. Thus, as if it needed confirmation, we see now that Dara Torres knew what she was talking about when she unveiled her first Milk Mustache ad:  Read More →
Ms. Olympia 2009: Congratulations, Iris Kyle! (but you deserve more)
Iris Kyle won her fifth Ms. Olympia last weekend. One doesn’t risk much saying that she is this decade’s dominant female bodybuilder. But has she been rewarded enough for her talent and hard work? Apparently not . Kyle was paid a meager $28,000 this year while the winner on the men’s side got $200,000—a shocking discrepancy that...
An irresistible force
Thus far Brittney Griner has been the unarguable star of this year’s NCAA basketball tournament—men’s side included—and she took things a notch further last night when she pulled her Baylor Bears through to an upset victory over Duke . Next up for Griner and Baylor: a Final Four appearance and probable showdown with undefeated UConn...
