In August 2009, scientists announced the discovery of the amino acid, glycine, on the comet Wild 2. These molecules are particularly important in biochemistry, where this term refers to alpha-amino acids with the general formula H2NCHRCOOH, where R is an organic substituent. In the alpha amino acids, the amino and carboxylate groups are attached to the same carbon atom, which is called the αcarbon. The various alpha amino acids differ in which side chain (R group) is attached to their alpha carbon. These side chains can vary in size from just a hydrogen atom in glycine, to a methyl group in alanine, through to a large heterocyclic group in tryptophan. Amino acids are critical to life, and their most important function is their variety of roles in metabolism.   The Importance of Amino Acids...
  This video clip is from part of an interview with Dr. Bralley discussing the importance of amino acids in the body. Amino Acids may not be something you think of that can be a problem with a patient because you think to yourself that most American's eat plenty of protein. However, if we remember back to basic physiology, amino acids come as essential and non-essential and they also come as conditionally essential, eg Glycine for conjugation reactions in detoxification processes. Amino acids are in a constant state of dynamic flux in the body, acting as the building blocks of muscle, connective tissue, antibodies, neurotransmitters and more. As Dr. Bralley shows in his clinical example, they can be very helpful to support people who have unexplained fatigue most probably by supporting the Kreb's cycle and/or neurotransmitter synthesis.
